Montclair State University’s Outdoor Halloween Movie Party is a Huge Success!

Amid COVID MSU hosted an outdoor screening of The Craft on October 13th, 2020 that had a large turnout and received praise from students.

Montclair, NJ: On Saturday, Montclair State University held a Halloween outdoor movie party for students. An outdoor movie party is when a movie is projected on a large screen outside so many viewers can watch the film six feet apart. Not only did they screen “The Craft” but they also had spooky snacks, comfortable chairs, and blankets available for students to use. The event was held in the courtyard in front of the student center right in the middle of the campus. The event was run by Weekends at Montclair also known as WAM. WAM is a student organization at MSU that provides free programs and events for all students during the weekend with the goal of having fun.

The idea for the Halloween movie party came from student and WAM member Nigel Savage. Everyone at WAM loved the idea and they made it a reality. In addition to watching The Craft students were also able to participate and vote in a Halloween costume contest. This made the event even more festive because dozens of students were dressed in amazingly spooky costumes. The winner of the contest was sophomore Leslie Jacobs who dressed up as a witch from The Craft. To top it all off WAM decorated the courtyard and movie screen with Halloween decorations and lights making it feel like you were watching the movie in a haunted house.

“I am so happy with the turnout of the movie party. We really didn’t expect so many people to come or that so many people would enjoy it but I’m really glad that they did. COVID has really impacted events that are run by MSU so WAM is happy to create events like these that are fun but also allow for social distancing. We learned a lot from putting on this event and we can’t wait to have more fun events to help students destress from school and the pandemic.” said John Smith, WAM president. Smith followed up by saying, “ I am so grateful to everyone that came to our Spooky Halloween Movie party and hope to see even more people at our next event Horror Movie Trivia Night.”
