NATS: Cars honking and sounds of traffic VO: Texting while driving also known as distracted driving is a very serious issue. In 2018 over 3000 people were killed by texting while driving. A study found that over 1.6 million car crashes a year are caused by distracted driving. Today I’m sitting down with an offender of distracted driving and a victim to tell us their stories. Shaun Interview: “Hi my name is Shaun Northern, I’m 22 years old, I am from Montclair NJ and I am an offender of texting while driving”. Shaun Interview: “Ever since I started driving I always used my phone. I knew it was a bad thing to do but I thought I was a good enough driver that could text and drive and be fine. I was pretty good until I got an accident. Luckily, no one was seriously injured just a few broken bones and some deep cuts.” VO: Shaun was in the hospital for 2 days and totaled his car during the accident. Shaun Interview: “I have definitely learned from this experience I mean I could have died or worse killed someone. I am never going to text and drive again.” VO: Shaun was lucky to survive his accident with only minor injuries however some people aren’t as lucky like 19-year-old victim of distracted driving Luke. Luke Interview: Hi, my name is Luke Fernandez and I’m 19years old. Last year I was involved in a pretty bad car accident. My best friend and I were driving home from the city when we were rear-ended by a pickup truck. Luke Interview: I don’t completely remember what happened directly after the accident. I totally blacked out but from what my family and Stacy tell me we were rushed to the hospital with pretty bad injuries. Luke interview: I was in the hospital for 1 month with brain damage and spinal injuries. I had to have 3 different surgeries. I’m so lucky to be alive. VO: Luke’s accident was caused by a distracted driver who was on there phone when they suddenly hit his car. Luke interview: When I found out the reason we where hit was because the other driver was on his phone I was pissed. We could have died just because he couldn’t wait to send a text. VO: Like Shuan Luke was also very lucky to have not been killed during his accident caused by distarted driving. Sadly, thousands of people aren’t so lucky. VO: It’s up to us to end distracted driving. So please save a life put down your phone when you drive. Any distraction could be deadly.
