At first glance Lovecraft Country seems like your standard sci fi TV show but it is so much more than that. The first two episodes start slowly by building the characters and the world which is the US during the 60s . Atticus Freeman “Tick” played by Jonathan Majors is the main character, an army veteran who returns home to look for his missing father. He is joined by his uncle George played by Courtney Vance who creates safe travel guides for African Americans. They are also joined by photographer Letitia Jackson played by Jurnee Smollet. On their journey to find Tick’s dad Montrose they are almost killed by huge 100 eyed creatures that act like vampires. Soon after the group finds themselves trapped in a mansion where it is revealed that Tick is the only living descendant of the leader of a cult of wizards. After the first 2 episodes the show really picks up mixing action, sci fi, and horror in a unique blend that keeps viewers hooked. Letitia Jackson is a stand out for me because of how entertaining and funny she is. My favorite episode so far was episode 3. In this episode Letitia buys a house in an all white neighborhood and rents out the rooms to other black people. This causes all Letitia and all of the renters to be harassed by their white neighbors and the police. Also it turns out that the house is haunted by the previous owner who was a wizard who kidnapped black people and experimented on them. This episode had a lot of great moments like when the deformed ghost came to help Letitia expel the ghost that was haunting the house and when the ghosts killed the three white supremacist. Overall, I think that the show is great so far and is having a fantastic first season. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone who likes sci fi and the supernatural.
